Protect Your Email Address

Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same messages, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive. You can improve your chances of avoided the hassles of spam in your email inbox.

Marketers have special software available that can send hundreds of thousands of email messages to a list of addresses at the click of a mouse. Typically, these email spammers compile their lists by “harvesting” addresses from the Internet. To avoid being on this list, be careful about sharing your e-mail address. Keep your primary e-mail address private and share it only with people you know. Avoid listing your primary e-mail address in large Internet directories and job-posting websites.

Create a unique e-mail name that’s tough to track. Your choice of email addresses may affect the amount of spam you receive. Spammers use "dictionary attacks" to sort through possible name combinations at large ISPs or email services, hoping to find a valid address. Try a combination of letters, numbers, and other characters. Research shows that people with such names get less junk e-mail.

In order to cut down on spam, it is recommended to take advantage of your email provider’s anti-spam programming and the Filters and Rules available with email management programs to screen and remove spam from your in-box.
